Big Sky, Big Rock Devil's Tower, WY, Saturday, 10 September 2011 9:04pm

It became abundantly clear why they call Montana "Big Sky Country" today. Most of the day's riding was through dry fields under a huge, cloudless sky.

I stopped for a little while at the site of the Battle of Little Bighorn. I haven't thought much about that particular chapter of American history since I was in elementary school and read a biography of Custer. Seeing the site made a lot of the tactics I'd read about make more sense. I now understand how you could not know how large the force you were facing was, and how important it would be to hold strategic hilltops.

The roads became much more interesting when I crossed into Wyoming. Curves through forested hills, rather than straight lines across plains.

I arrived at Devil's Tower in the early afternoon and claimed a campsite. Then I headed up to the tower. It's amazing. The sun was setting as I walked around it, so I got to see the weird geometries of the columns in many different angles of light. Actually, the striking thing is not that the geometries are weird, but that they're so very regular. They're huge rock formations in simple geometric shapes.

There were a few climbers on the tower. If I ever start rock climbing outdoors, I'm going to have to come back here.
