Getting There - Aneel's Travelogue

First dives Roatan, Honduras, Sunday, 06 July 2008 9:35pm

Vivid dreams woke me up at 5:30 before the first day of diving.

We started with a refresher that included some basic skills and an orientation. We went down to the wreck of a ship, which was really neat. The play of light through the different levels was quite pretty. Our instructor Alejandra was really clear in her explanations, and quite friendly. She pointed out a scorpionfish that I would never have seen, because of its camouflage.

Our second dive was a boat dive with much more experienced divers (and also some at about our level), which was intimidating to some degree. I was worried about running out of air much sooner than everyone else. It turned out to not matter much, because the divemaster was very good. He moved us along at a pace that put me in the right place at the right time, while still keeping everyone in an area where there were things to see.

The third dive was a wall dive along the seawall near the resort. I spent much of my dive working on buoyancy skills, making sure I could hold position relative to a landmark and could stay within a certain range of my buddy.

We got so see a nice pink sunset, and then to watch an electrical storm flash in the distance over the mainland. There was some really impressive cloud-to-cloud lightning.

Your descriptions almost make me want to learn to dive.

Almost.
